Croatia and its many islands

We arrived in Croatia via a ferry from Italy, which personally, I don't think knew its own potential. The captain didn't know how to work the microphone so all announcements were received by every person onboard with covered ears and wincing faces, and I don't think they understood the design and proper use of air conditioning, as they left it on all night meaning that Maria froze and hardly slept a wink even though we had found a wonderful bed-like couch to sleep on, and I had to get my down sleeping bag out of my bag to stop myself from waking up with frost bite.
Anyway we arrived in Croatia early one saturday morning to the lovely sunshine and amazingly blue water of the Adriatic.
We landed in a city called Split, the second most touristed city after Dubrovnik, right on the coast surrounded by little islands and mountains protecting it from any unwanted intruders.
We spent a lovely day exploring the city which is inclosed in the old ruins of a Palace, now only a few walls keeping everything in, but creating a wonderful labyrinth of streets and alleyways filled with shops and cafes.

The beautiful Town of Split

Maria really wanted to find a sun hat, so I made her try these on and took a picture so she could see what it looked like as there was no mirrors... and then I uploaded it to the internet.

I found and bought this at a Antique market in Split, and even now I'm not sure how I feel about it. It sits with my mounting collection of postcards that I have purchased over the last few months, I'm too scared to take it out and have a good look at it. But all in good time.

We walked up to the hill overlooking Split to see the sunset.

This is the famous beach on the island Brač, where we thought we would sleep because it would save us some money. But it's the last time I'm doing that this trip, as we managed to wake up at two in the morning to a massive massive storm that literally poured for 3 hours. We had to grab our stuff ( I lost my beloved torch that my grandma gave me) and run for the nearest shelter, which was a restaurant and slept the night there. Not much fun. We were discovered at 6 in the morning by the restaurant manager, who was actually very kind, but thought we were the biggest weirdos he'd ever met. So I think we learnt from that experience.

The main town on the island Brol.

We took a ferry to our next island, and the main island that people go to from Split, a little island named Hvar.
The captain served us breakfast at 9 in the morning which consisted of a piece of bread with a slice of ham and cheese, and then would you believe it, a glass of wine. At NINE in the morning!!! We took it anyway...

Hvar Town

Look how amazing the water is, I haven't done anything to this photo and the colour is just crazy!

Maria lying seducingly ( I don't believe that is a word) in our double bed. Need I say more.

A gorgeous little shrine I found in the side of a wall.

We walked up to the ancient fort overlooking the town.

This was taken from one of the old jail windows overlooking Hvar, down there, I finally told myself that I really didn't like prisons, and promised myself that I wouldn't go into one again.

We had two nights in Hvar, staying with an old couple in our own room, much cheaper then we would have if we had stayed at a hostel. We sketched and watched movies and had a really great time. We had quite a chilled couple of days, talking to our travelling friends on Skype they mentioned the three month funk, which they had just hit and made us feel a bit better about ourselves and not as guilty for not getting out as much as we could have.
I found a love for Croatian pastry, that I have yet to find competition for in any of the other places we have been.

Next stop is Dubrovnik, a Ferry and Bus trip away.
See you then folks
Love Katie G xx
